The more we rely on technology for the goings-on in our daily lives, the more we lose touch with nature. Our children are growing up faster than ever, and it’s crucial for parents to encourage their children to drop their smartphone, iPad or game console and step outside the house.
Here are 5 simple, fun exercise activities for kids:
Pick-up sports: There’s always the foolproof way of doing exercising outdoors: playing sports! Introduce your child to the joys of playing soccer, badminton, hockey, or whatever you think will fit best with his/her personality. Remember, don’t get too competitive. The point is for your child to have fun and exercise, not become competitive and insufferable.
Outdoor baby/toddler exercise class: If you’re lucky, you can join a fun mom/dad and kid classes with lots of engaging, simple activities prepared for kids and parents alike. Jump in the water and see if you like it!
Running: You can go for a few short jogs with your kids around the village, park, or wherever you can get fresh air. You can even make games out of it. How about playing tag or maybe having a race to your favorite spot on the trail?
Obstacle courses: If you have a backyard, feel free to create your own obstacles with stuff you have at home. Make your kids run, jump, crawl, and/or climb, and reward them with tasty (and healthy!) treats afterward.
Geocaching: If your kids are 6 and above, take advantage of their tech-savvy ways and turn a hike into a treasure hunt using GPS technology to locate the hidden treasures! This one takes a little more planning, considering you must “plat” the treasures, and log their positions on the GPS beforehand. However, the look on your kids’ faces when they find their first treasure will be priceless.
If you are open to organizing these activities for your child/children, you can try creating an exercise chart for kids to help you track the different activities and see which ones they like and which ones they don’t, and what you can do to improve them.
This way, you can take note of what your child/children are interested in, and where they excel. You never know, these simple exercises could also be a gateway to greater things.
